Bland Diet
The bland diet is usually prescribed by your physician if you are found to be suffering from a variety of ailments. Bland diets vary from physician to physician, but generally speaking, a bland diet consists of foods that are relatively low in fiber, spices of any kind, and sometimes may even be pureed versions of regular meals. At other times, a bland diet menu may simply consist of white foods, such as mashed potatoes, which may be augmented with foods that are usually associated with a clear diet, such as Jell-O and salt-free beef broth. A bland diet is not very palatable, since most of our taste buds have been conditioned to crave the salty and spicy foods offered by many fast food joints. Add to this the fact that a bland diet offers little with respect to texture, and you can easily understand why a physician’s help is needed to not only ensure that proper foods are eaten, but also to help you go forward with the bland diet. The list of bland diet foods that will be given to you may vary depending on the reason for the bland food diet your doctor gives you. For example, bland diet recipes for those who need to follow a bland diet for bleeding ulcers will vary from those who need to follow a medical bland diet with a high calorie intake for pancreatic cancer. Make sure that your doctor gives you a copy of a bland diet that is applicable to your ailment and read it over before you leave the office to make sure you understand the kinds of foods you are permitted to eat as well as the mode of preparation that is deemed acceptable.
Keep in mind that some of the foods on a bland diet may not work for you because of intolerances you may experience. For example, if you are prescribed a bland ulcer diet yet when you glance over your list of acceptable bland diet foods and recipes you notice cottage cheese and milk which may create a problem for your intestinal tract, it is important to speak up and request that your physician find you a lactose free version of the bland diet that will work better for you.
